Hexham is an historic market town in the county of Northumberland and located 25 miles to the east of Newcastle. It was first established as a Monastery and is close to the Roman ruins of the famous Hadrian’s Wall.
Hexham was first established as a Monastery in AD 674. The Abbey still standing in Hexham dates from the 11th Century. Hexham is a market town steeped in history, particularly from the wars over the Borders with the Scots dating back to 1297 and later the War of the Roses in 1464. Of the local tourist attractions, it is probably the Roman ruins of Hadrian’s Wall and that are best known.
Hexham won the ”Britain in Bloom” competition and was also nominated “England’s Favorite Market Town” by Country Life magazine. Hexham also has its own Railway station and there is an excellent road network to Newcastle and Carlisle.
